The
Show
“When I was
in high school, I belonged to an Asian gang. We called
ourselves the chess team.”
With that opening
salvo, standup comedian Daniel Kim makes it clear, right from the
start, that Asians Misbehavin’ is no ordinary evening of “Asian
American” theater. The audience roars with delight, erupting into
spontaneous applause, as they see, in rapid succession, standup
comedy, spoken word, and sketch comedy like they’ve never seen
before, written and performed by an all-Asian cast.
Although the group
likes to call itself an ensemble of “angry Asian American
underachievers from Philadelphia,” there are no slouches to be
found. The spoken word artists in the cast include Michelle Myers,
who has appeared on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam. In addition to being a
standup comedian, Daniel Kim is an established actor and singer, who
guest-starred on Margaret Cho’s sitcom All American Girl, and who
was a regular performer at East West Players, the country’s oldest
Asian American theater. Anula Shetty is an award-winning filmmaker,
whose work has appeared on television and in film festivals around
the world.
The show is
approximately one hour long, and is packed with material that never
fails to grip the audience, moving them to laughter and tears.
